Privacy Policy

Your mind's work
stays yours.

Underwood is a mental-wellbeing app, so the data you share can be deeply personal. We treat it that way. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, and the control you keep over it.

The short version
We never sell or rent your personal data — full stop.
Your journals, moods, and reflections are encrypted in transit and at rest.
You can export or delete everything at any time, from inside the app.
01

What we collect

Account basics: your name, email address, and the password hash needed to sign you in. If you join through a partner (like Apple), we receive only what you approve.

What you create in the app: mood check-ins, journal entries, thought records, program progress, and any notes you write. This is the heart of your experience and the most sensitive data we hold.

Limited technical data: app version, device type, and crash diagnostics that help us keep Underwood stable. Where possible this is aggregated and not tied to your identity.

02

How we use it

To run the app: saving your progress, syncing across your devices, and personalizing the programs and exercises we surface to you.

To improve Underwood: understanding which features help, in aggregate. We never read individual journals to do this.

To reach you: sending the occasional service email (a beta invite, an important account notice). You can opt out of non-essential mail at any time.

03

What we never do

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to advertisers or data brokers — there is no version of Underwood where that happens.

We do not use your private reflections to train third-party models, and we do not show you ads.

04

How we protect it

Your data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Sensitive content is stored separately from data that could identify you.

Access inside our team is limited to the few people who need it to operate the service, and every access is logged.

05

Your choices and rights

You can view, export, or permanently delete your data from inside the app, under Profile → Privacy. Deletion is irreversible and removes your content from our active systems.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (access, correction, portability, objection). Email us and we will honor them.

06

Data retention

We keep your data only while your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal content promptly and purge backups within 30 days, except where law requires us to keep limited records.

07

A note on clinical care

Underwood offers science-backed self-help tools — it is not a medical device or a substitute for professional care. If you are in crisis, please contact local emergency services or a crisis line. We never share your data with insurers or employers.

08

Changes to this policy

If we make a meaningful change, we will tell you in the app and update the date at the top of this page before it takes effect.
